The Federal Government supports bicycle commuting through its pretax bicycle commuter benefit. With the benefit, employers can reimburse up to $20 per month per bicycle commuting employee. Both the employee and the employer gain an advantage from the benefit. The employer saves on employment taxes by reimbursing the employee with funds prior to determining and paying its share of an employee’s taxes. The employee can put up to $240 into bicycle commuting supplies and equipment maintenance including the bicycle, helmet, panniers, apparel, lights, and even a Ridekick power trailer! It’s a great way for the employer to stand behind its commitment to sustainability and decreasing its carbon footprint, and may give the employee just the right nudge to inspire bicycle commuting.
